ProseMap

Comparison

ProseMap compared with grammar checkers and AI writers

Two families of writing tools are usually set beside ProseMap. Grammar checkers test and polish sentences. AI writers generate text from a prompt. ProseMap does neither: it reads the draft you wrote, shows where it holds and where it lets go, and proposes fixes to single passages that you keep or drop.

ProseMap is a writing tool that shows how a draft holds together, sentence by sentence, and proposes fixes the writer keeps or drops in their own words. It is for people who write often and revise their own work: essays, articles, newsletters, chapters, posts and reports.

The short version

ToolWhat it doesWhat ProseMap does instead
GrammarlyChecks grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity and tone as you type, across the apps you write in, and offers rewrites you accept or dismiss.Reads the finished draft and scores whether each sentence does its job and whether the sentences hold together. A correct sentence that says nothing scores low.
ProWritingAidA grammar checker and style editor with reports on a manuscript: readability, sentence-length variety, repeated words, pacing and more, built from measurable features of the text.Judges function rather than measuring features. Repetition of an idea in different words is flagged as a type of handoff, not counted as a repeated word.
Hemingway EditorHighlights hard-to-read sentences, adverbs and passive voice, and gives a readability grade.Does not reward short sentences for their own sake. It scores whether a sentence is clear, specific, economical, controlled and doing its job in the paragraph, and whether it hands off to the next.
ChatGPTA general assistant that generates text from a prompt: a draft, a rewrite, a summary, an answer.Does not generate a piece. It analyses the piece you wrote and proposes fixes to single passages that you keep or drop. You can also connect ProseMap to ChatGPT or Claude and run its analyses from there.
JasperAn AI content platform for marketing teams that generates copy from briefs, templates and brand guidelines.Starts from your draft, not a brief, and never produces a finished piece. The words stay yours.

Grammar checkers

A grammar checker answers one question about a sentence: is it correct, and could it be tidier? That is a real job, and ProseMap does not do it as you type. What a grammar checker cannot tell you is that a correct sentence is empty, that it says the previous one again, or that the paragraph around it has stopped moving. ProseMap scores exactly those things: every sentence for whether it does its job, and every join between two sentences for whether the reader is carried across it.

ProseMap and Grammarly

Grammarly checks grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity and tone as you type, across the apps you write in, and offers rewrites you accept or dismiss.

ProseMap reads the finished draft and scores whether each sentence does its job and whether the sentences hold together. A correct sentence that says nothing scores low. Feature by feature.

ProseMap and ProWritingAid

ProWritingAid a grammar checker and style editor with reports on a manuscript: readability, sentence-length variety, repeated words, pacing and more, built from measurable features of the text.

ProseMap judges function rather than measuring features. Repetition of an idea in different words is flagged as a type of handoff, not counted as a repeated word. Feature by feature.

ProseMap and Hemingway Editor

Hemingway Editor highlights hard-to-read sentences, adverbs and passive voice, and gives a readability grade.

ProseMap does not reward short sentences for their own sake. It scores whether a sentence is clear, specific, economical, controlled and doing its job in the paragraph, and whether it hands off to the next.

AI writers

An AI writer gives you new text and asks you to accept it. After a few rounds the piece sounds like the tool and not like you. ProseMap works the other way round. It starts from your draft, shows you a map of what is working and what is not, and only then, if you ask, proposes wording for one passage. You see the original beside the proposal and keep it, change it, or drop it. Nothing enters your page because a model wrote it; it enters because you kept it.

ProseMap and ChatGPT

ChatGPT a general assistant that generates text from a prompt: a draft, a rewrite, a summary, an answer.

ProseMap does not generate a piece. It analyses the piece you wrote and proposes fixes to single passages that you keep or drop. You can also connect ProseMap to ChatGPT or Claude and run its analyses from there.

ProseMap and Jasper

Jasper an AI content platform for marketing teams that generates copy from briefs, templates and brand guidelines.

ProseMap starts from your draft, not a brief, and never produces a finished piece. The words stay yours.

What ProseMap does not do that they do

Which to use when

Use a grammar checker on the final pass, to get the sentences right. Use an AI writer when you want text you did not write. Use ProseMap on a draft that is yours and is not working yet, when the question is "why does this feel flat when nothing is wrong with it", and you want to fix it in your own words. Many writers will want more than one, at different stages.
