ProseMap and ProWritingAid: different jobs
ProWritingAid and ProseMap are not substitutes. ProWritingAid improves the correctness and style of your sentences. ProseMap shows whether each sentence is doing its job and whether the sentences hold together, and it draws the result as a map. Neither is a better version of the other.
What ProWritingAid does
ProWritingAid is a grammar checker and style editor aimed at long-form and fiction writers. Alongside corrections it produces reports on a manuscript: readability, sentence-length variety, overused and repeated words, cliches, pacing and more. The reports are built from measurable features of the text.
What ProseMap does
ProseMap reads a whole draft and scores every sentence from 0 to 100 on how well it works where it stands, scores every join between sentences as a handoff, and adds one judgment of the document's arc. It shows this as a map in which weak stretches are visible at a glance, ranks the places where a revision would pay off most, and explains any judgment on request. It does not correct grammar or spelling. How the scoring works.
Side by side
| ProWritingAid | ProseMap | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Grammar, style, and statistical reports on a manuscript | Judging whether each sentence does its job, and how sentences hand off to one another |
| How it decides | Largely rules and measurements: counts, lengths, word lists | A model reads each sentence in context and judges function; measurements are shown as evidence only |
| Repetition | Reports repeated words and phrases | Flags restatement of ideas, even in different words, as a type of handoff |
| Sentence variety | Charts sentence lengths | Does not reward variety for its own sake; scores control and function |
| Flow between sentences | Transition-word and pacing reports | Every handoff scored 0 to 100 and given a relation |
| Output | Many separate reports and inline suggestions | One map, ranked hotspots, and an explanation for any sentence you ask about |
| Disagreeing with it | Dismiss a suggestion | Overrule a judgment with a note, re-score under your view, or ask the evaluator to reconsider |
| Rewrites your text | Offers rephrasing suggestions | No, unless you ask for a revision draft from your own notes |

Which to use
ProWritingAid tells you measurable things about a manuscript and fixes its mechanics. ProseMap gives a reader's judgment of where the writing works and where it lets go. If your question is "are my sentences too long and have I overused this word", ProWritingAid answers it directly. If it is "why does this chapter feel flat when nothing is wrong with it", that is what ProseMap is for.
What ProseMap will not do
- It will not fix your grammar, spelling or punctuation.
- It does not work inside your word processor or browser as you type.
- It does not claim its scores are objective. ProseMap's scores and explanations are produced by AI models. They can be wrong, incomplete or misleading, and they are one reader's judgment rather than an objective measure of writing quality. Check anything that matters independently.
